macOS says Drifft cannot be opened

Open it from Applications rather than from the disk image window. macOS runs an app launched from a disk image in a temporary read only location, which is a common reason a perfectly good app reports that it cannot be opened.

The first time you open it, macOS asks whether you are sure, because the app came from the internet. That is expected. Press Open. The dialog names Drifft and says Apple checked it.

Updating from an older version

Quit Drifft first. Click the Drifft mark in the menu bar at the top of your screen and choose Quit, or press Command Q with the Drifft window in front. Updating while it is still running leaves the old version in memory, and macOS may refuse to replace it at all.

Then install it the same way. When macOS asks whether to replace the existing Drifft, choose Replace. That puts the new version exactly where the old one was, so nothing is duplicated and Drifft keeps the permissions you already granted it.

If your browser has saved several copies of the disk image, use the newest one. A file named something like Drifft-1.dmg is an older download, and installing from it would quietly put you back on an earlier version.

Checking the download is genuine

Every build is signed with Developer ID Application: Teghbir Singh (6824U42332). After downloading, in Terminal:

shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/Drifft.dmg
spctl -a -vvv -t exec /Applications/Drifft.app
codesign -dv --verbose=4 /Applications/Drifft.app 2>&1 | grep Authority

The first should print the checksum below. The second should say accepted and name the same Developer ID. The third should list that authority first.
